This or Something Better

I learned the hard way that my word is my power. It is dangerous to put great power into the hands of someone like me that does not know what they are doing. I have often heard that with great power comes great responsibility. My responsibility is watching what I say.

I remember saying that I was sick of my job. The Universe responded accordingly and my once healthy status immediately changed. That winter I was sick with a variety of illnesses both known and unknown in the civilized world of western medicine. The Universe was creative and took me at my word. The Universe has a built in automatic response system. Any casual utterance is subject to instant manifestation.

Being completely unaware of The Law, I blamed my sickness on the harsh cold winter. But no one else in the office seemed plagued by the strange and unusual illnesses. My word was my power and my word created the reality of my being sick at work. My word continued to afflict me.

I made the comment that I was tired of working and needed a vacation. Immediately I was assigned a very hard project that required long hours. The work on the project sometimes took me into the wee hours of the morning. I was already tired, overworked, and past due on a much needed vacation. The continuous long hours took a toll and my immune system took a dive. I developed mononucleosis and I had to take time off from work. I spent several months at home recuperating. This devastating illness sapped every ounce of my energy simply because of my utterance of ignorance that I was tired of work and needed some rest.

I never told The Universe how I wanted to take the time off from work. In the back of my mind, taking time off is taking a vacation in the tropics flopped down in a chair. I soak up the energy from the sun, the sand, and the waves while absorbing rich words from the text of a well written novel. If I would have been specific the outcome would have been more favorable. Instead, one of my co-workers took over my project in my absence. Guess what her bonus was? Yep, a paid vacation to the tropical island of Kauai.

During my unscheduled rest, I decided to dedicate more of myself to the company and climb the executive ladder. I uttered the words, "I am going to climb the ladder all the way to the top." The Omnipotent Universe was right on top of things.

My supervisor called me into his office. He had a job offer to discuss with me over lunch. I met my boss at one of the finest restaurants in town. I thought to myself, at last, I am on my way to the top and it is about time for things to change in my favor. Before entering the doors of swankdom, I took a deep breath and visualized myself at the top of the ladder. I sat down at the table with my supervisor and I was ready to hear the good news cascade from his lips like expensive champagne filling a fine crystal glass. The words poured from his mouth, but not the words that I had expected to hear.

He explained that the company had recently undergone some changes during my absence and I was to be assigned a new position. He said, "It's nothing personal, we had to re--structure for cost reductions and your old position no longer exists. We can offer you a position as the new maintenance coordinator."

My first assignment was to change out the light-bulbs in my supervisor's office. The suspended ceiling containing the recessed lighting is at least ten feet from the floor. I had to use a ladder and a safety harness to successfully complete my work. My new position at the office brought diverted glances, cryptic whispers, and whimsical snickering. The word around the office was that I was the bright new executive climbing the ladder of success. I was tired of 60 watt ideas and the dim future The Universe had laid out before me.

I realized that The Universe was taking me at my word and to get the changes that I wanted to see then I had to be specific with my word. That night I went home and wrote down exactly what I wanted to see happen at the office the next day. So there would not be any misunderstandings I showed the list to The Universe and I said, "This or something better."

The next day was different. It seems my words made an impression. The company made the decision to open a new branch office on the island of Kauai. My supervisor elected me to run the new branch office. So here I am in Kauai, soaking up the sand, the sun, and the waves everyday. It looks like I got something better.

I really enjoyed this one! I think we all need to watch the words that we say ... need I say more?
